Message from Advisory Board Member

In terms of what scientists do for the future as well as graduate students today, they operate on the global basis. That means they should meet and collaborate with the best in the world on their research and development. They should also travel to see and experience different cultures. This broadens their perspective and helps them to become better scientists and better citizens.
In my own laboratory, I have had students and postdoctoral fellows from all over the world, all continents, at one time. I learn from these students, and later on they learn from each other. They learn of different value systems in different societies and different roles and different responsibilities. Through these experiences, it is so important in enrichening your view as a student and your outlook for the future.
Early on, I happened to build up a research group with a few Canadians but mostly foreigners. Simply, the purpose was to attract excellent people from different parts of the world. However, a subheading was to encourage them to work together as a team and learn from each other. That is really important.
I champion international experiences. It is excellent that a person coming to Osaka Prefecture University to give a lecture or lectures. There is one student in my laboratory now from Osaka Prefecture University for three months. She is hopefully learning some different ways to approach science and address a problem and so on, but she is also learning about different cultures from other co-workers, and she is learning about Canadian society. She will be our ambassador. She will come back to Japan and tell her co-workers that what experience she had and what new things she learned, some of which are not relevant to Japan and some of which could be of value.
So this program works in both directions. That is why this program is very important to build a higher level of participation.
For graduate students in Osaka Prefecture University, they should pursue with bigger enthusiasm the work that they do, that is the research that they do. It teaches them how to approach and solve a problem of some significance.
Whether they pursue their career in a narrow field, within a subject like biology or chemistry, is less important than the exercise of solving the problem and how you approach solving the problem. You may end up being a biologist having started as a biologist but in a different area of biology. That is great. The issue is to learn the scientific method and the approach, and by scientific method that applies to social sciences, humanities and to all areas.
Students must move forward with confidence in themselves, confident in their future, that they will be a significant contributor to Japan and Japanese society.
