What made me be a chemist?

Chemists are the craftsmen of science: they create new matter, and enjoy observing its properties and working at explaining them. This is the way I feel my work. When I started playing with chemistry, I selected a topic that would allow me to both create new compounds and think about their potential applications. Where does this passion come from?

When I was a teenager, I had the opportunity to access to “Palais de la découverte” science museum where experiences were performed in front of visitors. Among all presented topics, chemistry came to me as the most fascinating one, and as a world where I could develop some skills.

In the first years of school, after mastering basic knowledge for reading, writing and counting, time comes for discovering numerous topics more or less attractive. In my opinion, the way the story is told to children is determinant for raising their interest. Science should be approached through experimental sequences. Following the “hands on” program developed by Leon Lederman in Chicago, Georges Charpak initiated “La main à la pâte”, a science program largely developed in French primary schools. This program combines active participation of children, and leads them to observe, share their observations, write procedures and comment their results. These are key-points to promote science and make children understand how research programs are developed in science laboratories. The objective of these programs is to make children be actors and get knowledge from their own experiments. Running an experiment “in live” affords a lot of satisfaction and help understanding the skills to be gathered for succeeding. Other “tricks” to attract children to science is to allow them to visit science museum and laboratories. Once a year, the French science festival “Fête de la science” organizes such visits and it is amazing how children are curious and enjoy meeting with researchers.

I am convinced that all these concrete approaches for discovering science are very important to attract students to science and they orientated my studies and carrier choices.  When I started playing with chemistry, I was very lucky to meet with Prof Patrick Cassoux whose challenges were along my wishes: use molecules as materials building blocks, that is design molecules that would organize to create a matter exhibiting physical properties. I was doubly lucky when he selected a class of molecules that led us to isolate the first superconductive material issuing from a metal complex. I was then at the beginning of my career and I still remember today how exciting was this day when we got a call from physicists announcing the observation of superconductivity in our material. At such a moment, you look like these teenagers, watching the experiment they are conducting with googly eyes and wide smiles, and “sweating” the satisfaction of the accomplishment.

Performing science and research is like being a child life long.
